Elegy for Thelonious

Damn the snow.
Its senseless beauty
pours a hard light
through the hemlock.
Thelonious is dead. Winter
drifts in the hourglass;
notes pour from the brain cup.
Damn the alley cat
wailing a muted dirge
off Lenox Ave.
Thelonious is dead.
Tonight's a lazy rhapsody of shadows
swaying to blue vertigo
& metaphysical funk.
Black trees in the wind.
Crepuscule with Nellie
plays inside the bowed head.
"Dig the Man Ray of piano!"
O Satisfaction,
hot fingers blur on those white rib keys.
Coming on the Hudson.
Monk's Dream.
The ghost of bebop
from 52nd Street,
footprints in the snow.
Damn February.
Let's go to Minton's
& play "modern malice"
till daybreak. Lord,
there's Thelonious
wearing that old funky hat
pulled down over his eyes.

Elegia para Thelonius

Dane-se a neve.
A sua beleza sem sentido
derrama uma luz dura
através da pala dos arbustos.
Thelonius morreu. Inverno
a cair lentamente na ampulheta;
notas derramadas da taça do cérebro.
Dane-se o gato do beco
que geme silenciosos cantos fúnebres
para além da Avenida Lenox.
Thelonius morreu.
É uma vagarosa rapsódia de sombras esta noite
arrepiando até à vertigem um blue
& um funk metafísico.
Tal as árvores negras no vento.
Crepuscule with Nellie
a tocar na cabeça reverente
“Eis o Man Ray do Piano!”
Ó Satisfação,
dedos ardentes ofuscam o marfim nas teclas.
Coming on the Hudson.
Monk’s Dream.
O fantasma do bebop
da Rua 52
deixa pegadas na neve.
Dane-se Fevereiro.
Vamos até ao Minton’s
& tocar "maliciosamente"
até à alvorada. Senhor,
aqui está Thelonious
com aquele velho chapéu discreto
sobre os olhos.
